This is our final week of school, and, therefore, our final homework blog of the year!

Our class has completed all testing for the year. Children will receive their report cards and diplomas on Monday morning, June 7th. Dismissal will be at 11:45. Lunch will not be served.

Although testing is done, we will still do lessons in all of our subject areas. I'm planning a lot of addition and subtraction practice. Children will be practicing handwriting on the smartboard and on paper. We will read most of the books from Units 5 and 6 in the Reading series. We also want to finish the "Junie B. Jones" books that we have been reading aloud.

We will be having a summer birthday celebration. If your child has a summer birthday, he/she will receive a birthday crown, card, pencil and bookmark. I will be bringing in the cupcakes since it is also my birthday in June. The children are anxious to find out just how old I really am.

I did take time to remind the children of the reason that we celebrate Memorial Day. Let's try to take time to remember those men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country. Let's remember to thank all veterans for all that they gave so that we could be safe and free!

WEEKLY NEWS
OF COURSE THIS IS THE BIG WEEK WHEN CHILDREN HAVE THE PTO CARNIVAL AND KINDERGARTEN GRADUATION. HOWEVER, WE WILL ALSO TRY TO LEARN AND WORK IN SCHOOL TOO.
IN MATH WE WILL FINISH THE CHAPTER (AND BOOK) ON SUBTRACTION. THE CHILDREN ARE DOING QUITE WELL; I THINK THEY LIKE CROSSING THINGS OUT.
IN PHONICS WE STILL HAVE A FEW KEY CONCEPTS TO LEARN. WE WILL TALK ABOUT THE "VOWEL, CONSONANT, E " RULE. THAT IS WHERE THERE IS A SILENT OR "SNEAKY E ON THE END OF A WORD AND IT MAKES THE VOWEL LONG, SO WE CODE IT WITH A MACRON. BACK IN THE OLD DAYS, WE SAID IT TOOK THE VOWEL FOR A WALK. WE WILL ALSO TALK ABOUT DIGRAPH CH AND EE.
IN READING WE WILL FINISH TESTING ON UNIT 4 OF OUR READING SERIES AND EACH DAY, WE WILL READ ONE OR TWO OF THE BOOKS FROM UNITS 5 AND 6 OF THE READING SERIES.

KINDERGARTEN NEWS
THANK YOU TO OUR FIVE CHAPERONES: MRS. REIDLER, MRS. TETER, MRS. WALCHAK, MRS. HOCKING AND MRS. HEPLER. THEY WERE A BIG HELP ON THE FIELD TRIP TO LAKE TOBIAS. THEY WERE VERY PATIENT AND HELPFUL!!!
This week in phonics lessons we will focus on digraph oo as in hook and tooth. We will not have Show & Tell due to special activities planned.
Due to all of the testing and our field trip last week, we still need to finish our story, "Abuela" and review for our Unit 4 reading test. Hopefully, by the end of the week, we will begin Unit 5, "Going Places." Our first story will be "Max Takes the Train" by Rosemary Wells. It is an animal fantasy story and we will discuss realism and fantasy.
We have started our new Math chapter (12) on subtraction. We are acting our problems, using models to figure out subtraction sentences and drawing pictures. So far things are going well.
We are continuing to practice writing numbers. Some children need reminders about how to write certain numbers and some children write numbers backwards (that is normal for this age).
On Thursday, May 20th we will walk over to North Schuylkill High School to attend the Spring Concert. We will listen to the band and chorus, so we will be gone all morning. We will be eating lunch 1/2 hour later than usual. Please be sure your child eats a good breakfast that morning.
The children seemed to have a wonderful field trip experience. They loved seeing all of the different animals and getting to touch/feed many of the animals. I'm sure many of the children would enjoy going back to Lake Tobias this summer with their families.
The NSE yearbooks have arrived. There are still yearbooks available to purchase. They are $15.00 and you can send cash or check (make it out to North Schuylkill Elementary School).
Monday, May 17th is Day 4 - Library Book Exchange.

NEWSLETTER
THIS WEEK OUR PHONICS LESSONS FOCUS ON THE TWO SOUNDS OF DIGRAPH TH. IT MAKES A VOICED (VIBRATING) SOUND AS IN FEATHER AND AN UNVOICED SOUND AS IN THIMBLE. THIS IS DIFFICULT SO GOING OVER DAILY WORKSHEETS TO REVIEW WOULD BE HELPFUL. THERE WILL BE NO SHOW & TELL AGAIN DUE TO OUR FIELD TRIP ON THURSDAY.
IN READING WE WILL KEEP LISTENING TO THE STORY "ABUELA." THE CHILDREN ARE REALLY ENJOYING LEARNING THE WORDS AND EXPRESSIONS IN SPANISH. THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE ALSO VERY COLORFUL. WE WILL ALSO LEARN ABOUT SETTING AND REVIEW THE LETTER Ee. THEN AT THE END OF THE WEEK WE WILL BEGIN TESTING ON UNIT 4 OF THE READING SERIES.
IN MATH WE WILL TEST ON ADDITION (CHAPTER 11) ON MONDAY. THE STUDENTS DID REALLY WELL WITH THE CONCEPT OF ADDITION. THEN WE WILL BEGIN LEARNING ABOUT SUBTRACTION ON TUESDAY-BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THAT IS THE LAST CHAPTER OF OUR BOOK.
LAST WEEK WE DID THE DIBELS TEST WITH THE READING TEACHERS (WE DO NOT HAVE THE RESULTS YET). THIS WEEK WE WILL BEGIN A DIFFERENT SET OF TESTS WITH THE READING TEACHERS. CHILDREN WILL NEED TO RECOGNIZE, WRITE AND GIVE THE SOUND TO EVERY LETTER IN THE ALPHABET. THEY WILL NEED TO WRITE A DICTATED SENTENCE (BUT SPELLING WILL NOT HAVE TO BE CORRECT). THEY WILL HAVE TO BLEND SOUNDS TO READ A WORD; GIVE A WORD FOR EACH LETTER OF THE ALPHABET AND BE ABLE TO USE WORDS IN A SENTENCE. THEY WILL ALSO HAVE TO WRITE ALL THE WORDS THEY CAN THINK OF IN TEN MINUTES (SPELLING WILL HAVE TO BE CORRECT). WE WILL PRACTICE IN CLASS, BUT, ANY PRACTICE AT HOME WILL HELP TOO!
MONDAY, MAY 10TH IS DAY 5 AND WE HAVE COMPUTERS.
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
