MARCH 30 - APRIL 3, 2015

 
NEWS
 
 
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED TO OUR "CATS & DOGS" BASKET FOR THE PTO CHINESE AUCTION.  WE HAVE OVER 3 BOXES OF DONATIONS - LOTS OF FOOD, TREATS, TOYS, DISHES, A PET BED, ETC.  I THINK IT WILL DRAW A LOT OF INTEREST AND TICKETS. 
 
THIS WEEK WE START A NEW READING STORY AND A NEW MATH TOPIC. 
 
WE WILL BE READING ONE OF MY FAVORITES - "FROG AND TOAD TOGETHER: THE GARDEN." THE QUESTION OF THE WEEK IS "WHAT CHANGES HAPPEN IN A GARDEN?"  I HAVE OTHER FROG & TOAD STORIES I'D LIKE TO READ TO THE CLASS OR HAVE SOME STUDENTS READ TO THE OTHERS.  PLUS I'D LIKE TO TAKE THE TIME TO DO SOME PLANTING.  SO WE WILL TAKE THE NEXT TWO WEEKS FOR THIS STORY.
 
WE WILL HAVE A NEW SPELLING LIST; BUT, WE WILL NOT TEST UNTIL NEXT WEEK.
OUR NEW MATH TOPIC IS LENGTH.  WE WILL BE DOING LOTS OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF MEASURING AND COMPARING.

TUESDAY: DAY 4: LIBRARY:  STUDY SPELLING. READ NEW STORY AND H/F WORDS.  DO MATH WORKBOOK PAGES 12-1.
 
WEDNESDAY: DAY 5: COMPUTERS:  STUDY SPELLING.  REREAD STORY AND STUDY H/F WORDS.  DO MATH WORKBOOK PAGES 12-2.
 
THURSDAY: DAY 1: ART: LOOK FOR FRIDAY FOLDER TO COME HOME WITH REPORT CARD, PAPERS FROM THE OFFICE AND CORRECTED TESTS AND WORK.
 
FRIDAY: NO SCHOOL

MARCH 23-27, 2015

 
NEWS
 
 
WE MADE IT THROUGH TWO FULL WEEKS (EXCEPT FOR ME, I CHICKENED OUT ON FRIDAY!).  HOPEFULLY THAT WAS OUR "ONION SNOW" FOR THE YEAR.
 
WE WILL CONTINUE WITH OUR STORY, "THE CLASS PET." WE WILL STUDY VERBS (WHEN TO ADD AN -S AND WHEN NOT TO ADD).  WE WILL DISCUSS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FACT AND OPINION.  WE WILL PRACTICE WORDS WITH THE OR/ORE SOUND.  WE WILL ASSESS THIS STORY ON THURSDAY. 
 
THE SPELLING PRACTICE TEST WILL BE ON WEDNESDAY.  CHILDREN WHO NEED TO RETEST WILL DO SO ON THURSDAY.
 
WE WILL CONTINUE TOPIC 9 IN MATH AND WE WILL COMPARE NUMBERS (GREATER THAN & LESS THAN) AND PUT NUMBERS IN ORDER FROM LEAST TO GREATEST.  WE WILL ALSO TEST ON TOPIC 9 ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON.
 
ANYONE WHO WANTS TO DONATE TO THE PTO'S CHINESE AUCTION CAN SEND IN DONATIONS UNTIL FRIDAY, MARCH 27TH.  THE CHILDREN PICKED THE THEME "CATS & DOGS" AND, SO FAR, DONATIONS ARE FAVORING THE DOGS.  PEOPLE HAVE SENT IN DOG TOYS, TREATS AND A LEASH.  I AM GOING TO PUT THE DONATIONS IN A NEW PET BED THAT I DONATED ALONG WITH SOME CAT/DOG SUPPLIES.  I THINK THIS MAY TURN OUT TO BE A POPULAR THEME.

TUESDAY: DAY 4: LIBRARY: STUDY H/F WORDS.  STUDY FOR PRACTICE TEST ON SPELLING LIST.  DO MATH WORKBOOK PAGES 9-4.
 
WEDNESDAY: DAY 5: COMPUTERS: READ THE STORY FOR THE TEST TOMORROW.  DO MATH WORKBOOK PAGES 9-5.  IF NECESSARY, WRITE INCORRECT SPELLING WORDS 5X EACH AND STUDY FOR SPELLING RETEST.
 
THURSDAY: DAY 1: ART: READ A BOOK FOR YOUR READING LOG AND RELAX!
 
FRIDAY: DAY 2: GYM: PARENTS SHOULD LOOK FOR FRIDAY FOLDERS TO COME HOME WITH NEWSLETTER FOR MARCH AND OTHER PAPERS FROM THE OFFICE.

FIRST GRADE NEWS
 
ACCORDING TO THE WEATHER MAN WE MAY BE HERE THE FULL WEEK AGAIN!!!  I CAN HARDLY BELIEVE IT.  THIS WEEK WE WILL CELEBRATING ST. PATRICK'S DAY AND THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING.  WE ARE HOPING THE LEPRECHAUNS PAY US A VISIT ON TUESDAY.  WE HAVE ALL SORTS OF ACTIVITIES PLANNED. 
 
WE WILL START A NEW STORY THIS WEEK CALLED "THE CLASS PET."  WE WILL PRACTICING ADDING -ES TO WORDS TO MAKE THEM PLURAL.  WE WILL PRACTICE THE /OR/ SPELLED OR AND ORE.  WE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FACTS AND OPINIONS.  PLUS WE WILL TALK ABOUT HOW ANIMALS CHANGE AS THEY GROW. WE WILL STUDY THE STORY ABOUT SIX DAYS BEFORE TESTING.
 
IN SPELLING WE WILL PRACTICE WORDS WITH AND WITHOUT -ES ON THE END; PLUS TWO H/F WORDS.  WE WILL NOT HAVE THE PRACTICE TEST UNTIL NEXT TUESDAY. THEN THE RETEST WILL BE GIVEN ON WEDNESDAY.
 
IN MATH WE WILL BE STARTING TOPIC 9 WHICH COVERS PUTTING NUMBERS IN ORDER AND COMPARING NUMBERS.  WE WILL USE THE HUNDRED CHART AGAIN AND STUDENTS WILL BE IDENTIFYING ONE LESS, ONE MORE AND TEN LESS AND TEN MORE.  THEY WILL ALSO LEARN THE GREATER THAN AND LESS THAN SYMBOL.
HOMEWORK
 
MONDAY: DAY 4: LIBRARY:  LOOK FOR MATH TOPIC 9 OPENER WITH A LETTER TO PARENTS.  STUDY THE NEW SPELLING LIST AND DO THE MISSING LETTER WORKSHEET. 
TUESDAY: DAY 5: COMPUTERS: ASK YOUR CHILD ABOUT ST. PATRICK'S DAY ACTIVITIES. STUDY SPELLING LIST AND DO WORKBOOK PAGE.
WEDNESDAY: DAY 1: ART: READ NEW STORY, "THE CLASS PET." PRACTICE H/F WORDS ON PAGE 89.  STUDY SPELLING LIST. DO MATH WORKBOOK PAGES 9-1.
THURSDAY: DAY 2: GYM:  READ THE STORY, STUDY H/F WORDS.  STUDY SPELLING WORDS. DO MATH WORKBOOK PAGES 9-2.
FRIDAY: DAY 3: MUSIC: LOOK FOR FRIDAY FOLDERS WITH GRADED TESTS (READING, WRITING AND MATH) AND ANY PAPERS FROM THE OFFICE.

FIRST GRADE NEWS 
 
WELL, WHAT CAN I SAY, EXCEPT THAT I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY HOPE WE HAVE A FULL WEEK.  IN 25 YEARS OF TEACHING I HAVE NEVER HAD A WINTER LIKE THIS! WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO GET STUDENTS AND STAFF BACK INTO THE SCHOOL ROUTINE.  WISH US LUCK (AND GOOD WEATHER).
 
WE WILL CONTINUE WITH THE ANIMAL FANTASY, "RUBY IN HER OWN TIME." IF I THINK THE CHILDREN ARE READY, I WILL TEST THEM ON THE STORY ON FRIDAY. 
 
WE WILL CONTINUE WITH THE SAME SPELLING LIST.  WE WILL HAVE THE PRACTICE TEST ON THURSDAY.  THEN, IF NEEDED, WE WILL RETEST ON FRIDAY.
 
WE WILL CONTINUE WITH MATH TOPIC 8.  WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO REVIEW AND FINISH THE TOPIC BY THURSDAY (I'M ALMOST AFRAID TO SAY THAT FOR FEAR THAT I'LL JINX US).
 
THIS WEEK I WOULD LIKE TO GET US STARTED WITH WRITING ABOUT ST. PATRICK'S DAY AND SPRING.  WE WILL HAVE A CELEBRATION FOR ST. PATRICK'S DAY.  WE WILL DO SOME SCIENCE, MATH, READING AND ART ACTIVITIES RELATED TO THE HOLIDAY.  OF COURSE WE WILL BE ENCOURAGED TO WEAR GREEN!

MONDAY: DAY 4: LIBRARY: READ THE STORY.  STUDY THE SPELLING WORDS. DO MATH WORKBOOK PAGES 8-5.
 
TUESDAY: DAY 5: COMPUTERS: READ THE STORY.  STUDY THE SPELLING WORDS.  DO MATH WORKBOOK 8-6.
 
WEDNESDAY: DAY 1: ART: READ THE DECODABLE READER.  DO SPELLING WORKBOOK PAGE/STUDY FOR PRACTICE TEST.
 
THURSDAY: DAY 2: GYM: REREAD THE STORY AND STUDY THE HIGH/FREQUENCY WORDS. IF YOU DID NOT EARN A 100 ON THE SPELLING PRACTICE TEST, THEN WRITE THE INCORRECT WORDS 5X EACH ON THE BACK OF THE TEST AND STUDY FOR RETEST TOMORROW.
 
FRIDAY: DAY 3: MUSIC: PARENTS SHOULD LOOK FOR FRIDAY FOLDERS TO COME HOME WITH PAPERS FROM THE OFFICE AND CORRECTED TESTS/PAPERS TOO.

THIS WEEK WE WILL BE STUDYING THE ANIMAL FANTASY, "RUBY IN HER OWN TIME."  WE WILL ALSO BE LEARNING SPELLING WORDS THAT END WITH NG AND NK. WE WILL STUDY COMPOUND WORDS AND, AS USUAL, THE HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS.
 
WE WILL ALSO BE WORKING MORE WITH VERBS.  ALTHOUGH THIS WEEK WE WILL LEARN TO ADD -S WHEN NEEDED TO VERBS. 
 
WE WILL LEARN TO WRITE 2 DIGIT NUMBERS WITH TENS AND ONES IN EXPANDED FORM AND IN TABLES.  THEN, DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER, WE WILL TEST ON TOPIC 8.
