MONDAY-MEMORIAL DAY:  NO SCHOOL!
 
TUESDAY: DAY 4: LIBRARY: NO HOMEWORK!
 
WEDNESDAY: DAY 5: COMPUTERS AND SUMMER BIRTHDAYS' PARTY: READ FOR FUN!  NO WRITTEN HOMEWORK!
 
THURSDAY: CARNIVAL DAY: GET A GOOD NIGHT'S REST.  WEAR SUNSCREEN.  BRING EXTRA SOCKS (SOCKS OFTEN GET WET WHILE WAITING IN-LINE OUTSIDE). HAVE FUN!
 
FRIDAY: EARLY DISMISSAL: LUNCH WILL BE FROM 9:15 - 9:45.  DISMISSAL TIME IS AT 11:45.  REPORT CARDS WILL BE GIVEN TO EACH STUDENT.  THEY WILL ALSO GET THEIR SOUVENIR PHOTO STRIP FROM THE CARNIVAL.

THE DAYS ARE DWINDLING DOWN!  THIS WEEK WE WILL HAVE OUR LAST SPELLING TESTS - A PRACTICE TEST ON THURSDAY AND A RETEST ON FRIDAY, IF NEEDED.  WE WILL BE READING SEVERAL STORIES THIS WEEK. SOME WILL BE FROM THE 4TH READING BOOK; SOME WILL BE BOOKS THAT I WILL READ TO THE CLASS.  WE WILL NOT HAVE ANOTHER READING TEST.
 
WE WILL DO SOME DOUBLE DIGIT ADDITION IN MATH; BUT, I DO NOT PLAN ON TESTING ON TOPIC 10.  WE WILL ALSO DO SOME OTHER PROJECTS. ONE IS A SUMMER BUCKET LIST.  I ALSO WANT THEM TO "SCULPT" A FIRST GRADE MEMORIAL OUT OF MODELING CLAY.

STUDENTS HAD A LOT OF EXCITEMENT ON FRIDAY!  AT THE ACCELERATED READER PROGRAM ASSEMBLY SEVERAL OF OUR STUDENTS WON PRIZES AND JACOB WATSON EARNED A CERTIFICATE FOR COMPLETING THE MOST READING LOGS IN FIRST GRADE.
 
THEY ALSO DID THEIR LAST DIBELS READING ASSESSMENT FOR FIRST GRADE.  THEIR SCORES SHOULD BE AVAILABLE BEFORE YEAR'S END.
 
THIS WEEK WE WILL CONTINUE WITH OUR CURRENT READING STORY AND BEGIN A NEW STORY AND SPELLING LIST ON THURSDAY.  WE WILL ALSO CONTINUE IN MATH WITH TOPIC 14 - USING DATA TO ANSWER QUESTIONS.  STUDENTS HAVE BEEN DOING VERY WELL WITH THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF GRAPHS.  LATER THIS WEEK THEY WILL BE ASSESSED ON TOPIC 14.

THIS IS AN EXCITING WEEK! WE ARE STARTING OUR FOURTH READING BOOK, CELEBRATING "CINCO DE MAYO," AND WE ARE HAVING OUR "SPRING TEA" FOR OUR PARENTS.  WE WILL BE READING A STORY TITLED, "MAMA'S BIRTHDAY PRESENT."  THIS STORY IS ABOUT A MEXICAN-AMERICAN FAMILY AND USES SOME SPANISH WORDS.  PERFECT TIMING FOR CINCO DE MAYO.
 
IN MATH WE ARE CONTINUING TO STUDY USING DATA TO ANSWER QUESTIONS; SPECIFICALLY IN GRAPHS AND TALLY TABLES. 
 
OUR SPELLING LIST IS COMPOSED OF WORDS WITH VOWEL DIGRAPHS - AI & AY, PLUS TWO H/F WORDS AND THE VERY POPULAR "BONUS" WORDS.  THIS WEEK WE TOOK THE WORDS FROM OUR READING STORY'S LIST OF AMAZING WORDS.
 
WE HAVE RECEIVED MANY RESPONSES FOR OUR SPRING TEA.  MOTHERS AND DADS SHOULD BE PREPARED TO BE SURPRISED (PLEASANTLY)!

ONLY TWO MORE DAYS OF PSSAs THEN WE WILL RETURN TO OUR NORMAL SCHEDULE!  HOWEVER, IT IS 4TH GRADE TAKING THE SCIENCE TESTS AND THEY ARE RIGHT BELOW THE FIRST GRADE WING, SO WE HAVE TO TRY TO REMAIN QUIET.
 
THIS IS THE WEEK OF THE BIG EVENT - THE FIELD TRIP TO HERSHEY CHOCOLATE WORLD.  THE CHILDREN ARE VERY EXCITED AND I AM SURE THEY WILL ENJOY THEMSELVES, AND, HOPEFULLY LEARN SOMETHING TOO.
 
NEXT WEEK WE WILL BE HAVING OUR "SPRING TEA" FOR MOTHERS AND DADS! OUR INVITATION WILL COME HOME EARLY THIS WEEK.  OUR CLASS WILL BE PREPARING FOR THE TEA, THIS WEEK AND NEXT; BUT, PLEASE DON'T ASK FOR DETAILS, WE ARE SAVING SOME SECRETS TIL NEXT WEEK!
 
WE ARE STILL PRACTICING THE PLAY AND WORKING WITH CONTRACTIONS FOR TWO MORE DAYS.  THEN THE CHILDREN WILL BE TESTED ON THE PLAY ON WEDNESDAY.  WHEN WE RETURN TO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, WE WILL START READING BOOK #4.  WE WILL ALSO START A NEW STORY AND A NEW SPELLING LIST.
 
ALSO, WE WILL BEGIN A NEW TOPIC IN MATH - USING DATA TO ANSWER QUESTIONS(GRAPHS!).  CHILDREN WILL LEARN ABOUT DIFFERENT TYPES OF GRAPHS AND HOW TO USE THEM TO ANSWER QUESTIONS.

THIS WEEK WE BEGIN READING A PLAY, "WHERE ARE MY FRIENDS?"  WE WILL DISCUSS THE QUESTION, "WHAT DO ANIMALS DO WHEN SEASONS CHANGE?" STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT THE /J/ SPELLED DGE .  THEY WILL LEARN TO COMPARE THINGS BY ADDING -ER OR -EST.  PLUS WE WILL DO MORE WITH CONTRACTIONS, THIS TIME CONTRACTIONS WITH NOT.  WE ARE TRYING TO SO MORE AND MORE WRITING - PARTICULARLY SENTENCES. 
 
 IN MATH WE WILL BE USING CLOCKS, BOTH ANALOG AND DIGITAL, TO TELL TIME TO THE HOUR AND HALF HOUR.  THIS IS A SHORT TOPIC AND WE WILL TEST ON THURSDAY OF THIS WEEK.  WE CONTINUE TO PRACTICE MATH FACTS DURING THE WEEK.
 
AGAIN, THIS WEEK, THE PSSAs WILL BE GIVEN ON TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY.  OUR SCHEDULE WILL BE DIFFERENT AND WE WILL NEED TO BE ESPECIALLY QUIET.
 
PLEASE SEND YOUR CHILD'S FIELD TRIP PERMISSION FORM BACK TO SCHOOL SIGNED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.  SOME STUDENTS ALSO NEED TO RETURN THE FIELD TRIP LUNCH FORM (I HAVE EXTRA FORMS, IF NEEDED).

THIS WEEK WE WILL READ ABOUT THE CHANGES THAT CAN BE SEEN IN NATURE.  WE WILL READ ABOUT THE LIFE CYCLE OF A CATERPILLAR IN "I'M A CATERPILLAR."
 
WE WILL BE READING AND SPELLING WORDS WITH ER, IR, UR.  WE WILL ALSO STUDY CONTRACTIONS USING HAVE ('VE).  WE WILL BE WRITING USING THE VERBS: AM, IS, ARE, WAS, WERE.
 
IN MATH STUDENTS WILL REVIEW THE MEASURING SKILLS, AND, THEN BE TESTED ON TUESDAY.  ON WEDNESDAY WE BEGIN TOPIC 13-TELLING TIME (THIS IS A SHORT TOPIC).
 
THE NEXT TWO WEEKS THE PSSA TESTS WILL BE GIVEN TO 3,4,5,6TH GRADES.  PLEASE REMIND YOUR CHILD TO BE AS QUIET AS POSSIBLE IN SCHOOL.  OUR SCHEDULE WILL ALSO BE AFFECTED ON TUESDAYS, WEDNESDAYS, AND, THURSDAYS THE NEXT TWO WEEKS.  RECESS WILL BE 9:30-10:00 WITH A 2ND SHORT RECESS IN THE AFTERNOON FROM 2:15 TO 2:35.  THERE WILL BE NO SPECIAL CLASSES THOSE DAYS.
 
  SINCE WE WILL HAVE MORE TIME IN THE CLASSROOM, I AM KEEPING HOMEWORK TO SIMPLY READING THE STORY AND STUDYING THE SPELLING LIST.  YOU WILL NOTICE THAT THE SPELLING LIST NOW INCLUDES 3 BONUS WORDS.  ONE OF OUR STUDENTS SUGGESTED THESE WORDS.  YOUR CHILD CAN EARN BONUS POINTS IF THEY GET EVEN ONE OF THE WORDS CORRECT AND S/HE WILL NOT BE PENALIZED IF THEY GET THE WORDS INCORRECT.  IT IS SIMPLY A CHALLENGE!

WE WILL CONTINUE THIS WEEK WITH FROG & TOAD STORIES.  PLUS WE ALSO PLAN TO DO SOME PLANTING OURSELVES.  WE CONTINUE TO WORK WITH VERBS (DIFFERENTIATING BETWEEN PAST AND FUTURE).  WE ARE WORKING WITH THE AR SOUND AS IN STAR.  WE ARE ALSO TALKING ABOUT THE AUTHOR'S PURPOSE IN WRITING THE SELECTIONS WE READ. 
 
IN MATH WE ARE CONTINUING WITH THE MEASURING OF LENGTH.  DOING LOTS OF COMPARING AND MEASURING WITH THINGS LIKE CONNECTING CUBES AND PAPER CLIPS. 
 
WE WILL BE HAVING A SPELLING PRACTICE TEST ON THURSDAY.  THE RETEST ON FRIDAY.  WE WILL DO SOME PARTS OF THE READING TEST ON THURSDAY AND SOME PARTS ON FRIDAY MORNING.  STUDENTS ARE NOW BEING TESTED ON WRITING AND FLUENCY.  WE WANT TO SEE HOW MANY WORDS THEY CAN READ ACCURATELY IN ONE MINUTE AND WHETHER THEY COMPREHEND THE MATERIAL THEY HAVE READ.  THE MATH TEST WILL BE EARLY NEXT WEEK.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED TO OUR "CATS & DOGS" BASKET FOR THE PTO CHINESE AUCTION.  WE HAVE OVER 3 BOXES OF DONATIONS - LOTS OF FOOD, TREATS, TOYS, DISHES, A PET BED, ETC.  I THINK IT WILL DRAW A LOT OF INTEREST AND TICKETS. 
 
THIS WEEK WE START A NEW READING STORY AND A NEW MATH TOPIC. 
 
WE WILL BE READING ONE OF MY FAVORITES - "FROG AND TOAD TOGETHER: THE GARDEN." THE QUESTION OF THE WEEK IS "WHAT CHANGES HAPPEN IN A GARDEN?"  I HAVE OTHER FROG & TOAD STORIES I'D LIKE TO READ TO THE CLASS OR HAVE SOME STUDENTS READ TO THE OTHERS.  PLUS I'D LIKE TO TAKE THE TIME TO DO SOME PLANTING.  SO WE WILL TAKE THE NEXT TWO WEEKS FOR THIS STORY.
 
WE WILL HAVE A NEW SPELLING LIST; BUT, WE WILL NOT TEST UNTIL NEXT WEEK.
OUR NEW MATH TOPIC IS LENGTH.  WE WILL BE DOING LOTS OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF MEASURING AND COMPARING.

WE MADE IT THROUGH TWO FULL WEEKS (EXCEPT FOR ME, I CHICKENED OUT ON FRIDAY!).  HOPEFULLY THAT WAS OUR "ONION SNOW" FOR THE YEAR.
 
WE WILL CONTINUE WITH OUR STORY, "THE CLASS PET." WE WILL STUDY VERBS (WHEN TO ADD AN -S AND WHEN NOT TO ADD).  WE WILL DISCUSS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FACT AND OPINION.  WE WILL PRACTICE WORDS WITH THE OR/ORE SOUND.  WE WILL ASSESS THIS STORY ON THURSDAY. 
 
THE SPELLING PRACTICE TEST WILL BE ON WEDNESDAY.  CHILDREN WHO NEED TO RETEST WILL DO SO ON THURSDAY.
 
WE WILL CONTINUE TOPIC 9 IN MATH AND WE WILL COMPARE NUMBERS (GREATER THAN & LESS THAN) AND PUT NUMBERS IN ORDER FROM LEAST TO GREATEST.  WE WILL ALSO TEST ON TOPIC 9 ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON.
 
ANYONE WHO WANTS TO DONATE TO THE PTO'S CHINESE AUCTION CAN SEND IN DONATIONS UNTIL FRIDAY, MARCH 27TH.  THE CHILDREN PICKED THE THEME "CATS & DOGS" AND, SO FAR, DONATIONS ARE FAVORING THE DOGS.  PEOPLE HAVE SENT IN DOG TOYS, TREATS AND A LEASH.  I AM GOING TO PUT THE DONATIONS IN A NEW PET BED THAT I DONATED ALONG WITH SOME CAT/DOG SUPPLIES.  I THINK THIS MAY TURN OUT TO BE A POPULAR THEME.

ACCORDING TO THE WEATHER MAN WE MAY BE HERE THE FULL WEEK AGAIN!!!  I CAN HARDLY BELIEVE IT.  THIS WEEK WE WILL CELEBRATING ST. PATRICK'S DAY AND THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING.  WE ARE HOPING THE LEPRECHAUNS PAY US A VISIT ON TUESDAY.  WE HAVE ALL SORTS OF ACTIVITIES PLANNED. 
 
WE WILL START A NEW STORY THIS WEEK CALLED "THE CLASS PET."  WE WILL PRACTICING ADDING -ES TO WORDS TO MAKE THEM PLURAL.  WE WILL PRACTICE THE /OR/ SPELLED OR AND ORE.  WE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FACTS AND OPINIONS.  PLUS WE WILL TALK ABOUT HOW ANIMALS CHANGE AS THEY GROW. WE WILL STUDY THE STORY ABOUT SIX DAYS BEFORE TESTING.
 
IN SPELLING WE WILL PRACTICE WORDS WITH AND WITHOUT -ES ON THE END; PLUS TWO H/F WORDS.  WE WILL NOT HAVE THE PRACTICE TEST UNTIL NEXT TUESDAY. THEN THE RETEST WILL BE GIVEN ON WEDNESDAY.

FIRST GRADE NEWS 
 
WELL, WHAT CAN I SAY, EXCEPT THAT I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY HOPE WE HAVE A FULL WEEK.  IN 25 YEARS OF TEACHING I HAVE NEVER HAD A WINTER LIKE THIS! WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO GET STUDENTS AND STAFF BACK INTO THE SCHOOL ROUTINE.  WISH US LUCK (AND GOOD WEATHER).
 
WE WILL CONTINUE WITH THE ANIMAL FANTASY, "RUBY IN HER OWN TIME." IF I THINK THE CHILDREN ARE READY, I WILL TEST THEM ON THE STORY ON FRIDAY. 
 
WE WILL CONTINUE WITH THE SAME SPELLING LIST.  WE WILL HAVE THE PRACTICE TEST ON THURSDAY.  THEN, IF NEEDED, WE WILL RETEST ON FRIDAY.
 
WE WILL CONTINUE WITH MATH TOPIC 8.  WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO REVIEW AND FINISH THE TOPIC BY THURSDAY (I'M ALMOST AFRAID TO SAY THAT FOR FEAR THAT I'LL JINX US).
 
THIS WEEK I WOULD LIKE TO GET US STARTED WITH WRITING ABOUT ST. PATRICK'S DAY AND SPRING.  WE WILL HAVE A CELEBRATION FOR ST. PATRICK'S DAY.  WE WILL DO SOME SCIENCE, MATH, READING AND ART ACTIVITIES RELATED TO THE HOLIDAY.  OF COURSE WE WILL BE ENCOURAGED TO WEAR GREEN!

THREE HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK.  FIRST-"BRAINSHOWMANIA" ON WEDNESDAY.  THEN WE WATCH A PLAY PUT ON BY MRS. SHADLE'S THIRD GRADE CLASS.  FINALLY ON FRIDAY WE CELEBRATE DR. SEUSS' BIRTHDAY.  BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WILL VISIT K-3 CLASSES TO READ TO STUDENTS AND DO ACTIVITIES RELATED TO THE BOOKS.
 
ACADEMICALLY WE ARE CONTINUING TO STUDY THE REALISTIC FICTION, "A PLACE TO PLAY." WE WILL LEARN ABOUT VERBS, WORDS WITH Y (THAT SOUND LIKE VOWELS E OR I) AND THE ORDER OF EVENTS IN THE STORY. THE SPELLING PRACTICE TEST WILL BE TUESDAY; THE RETEST ON WEDNESDAY.  THE READING ASSESSMENTS WILL BE THURSDAY. WE WILL BE STARTING OUR THIRD READING BOOK THIS WEEK.  THE SELECTIONS FOCUS ON  CHANGING.   THE ESSENTIAL QUESTION IS "WHAT IS CHANGING IN OUR WORLD?"
 
WE WILL HAVE A NEW SPELLING LIST WITH WORDS THAT END WITH Y, BUT, THE Y MAKES A VOWEL SOUND, PLUS TWO H/F WORDS FROM THE STORY.  THE PRACTICE TEST WILL BE NEXT TUESDAY AND THE RETEST ON WEDNESDAY.
 
THIS WEEK WE WILL FINISH MATH TOPIC 7-COUNTING AND NUMBER PATTERNS TO 120 (UNLESS THE WEATHER GETS IN OUR WAY AGAIN!).  WE WILL TRY TO TEST ON EITHER THURSDAY OR FRIDAY.
 
NEXT WEEK WE HAVE TWO SPECIAL EVENTS-"BRAINSHOWMANIA" ON FEB. 25TH AND "READ ACROSS AMERICA" WHICH CELEBRATES THE BOOKS OF DR. SEUSS.  BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WILL COME AND READ TO THE CHILDREN AND DO SPECIAL ACTIVITIES.

FIRST GRADE NEWS
 
THIS WEEK WE WILL BE REVIEWING ALL OF THE WORDS AND SKILLS LEARNED IN UNIT 2 OF READING, THEN WE WILL HAVE THE UNIT 2 BOOKLET TEST.  THE CHILDREN ARE EXCITED BECAUSE THEY WILL SOON GET READING BOOK 3!
 
THERE WILL BE NO SPELLING UNTIL WE START THE FIRST STORY IN BOOK 3. 
 
IN MATH WE WILL CONTINUE TO WORK ON NUMBERS UP TO 120.  WE WILL SKIP COUNT BY 2S, 5S, AND 10S.  WE WILL LOOK AT HUNDRED CHARTS AND FIND PATTERNS. 
 
WE WILL HAVE THE JUMP ROPE FOR HEART ACTIVITY DURING OUR SPECIAL TIME ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11TH.  CHILDREN SHOULD WEAR SNEAKERS AND THEY CAN DRESS IN GYM CLOTHES THAT DAY.
 
ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12TH, WE WILL HAVE OUR CLASSROOM VALENTINE'S DAY PARTY.  WE DID MAKE OUR VALENTINES HOLDERS ON TUESDAY AFTERNOON.  PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD MAKE VALENTINES FOR THE CLASS AND THEN BRING THEM IN BY THURSDAY.  I HAVE EXTRA CLASS LISTS IF YOU NEED ONE.

STUDENTS HAD A BLAST ON FRIDAY WHEN THEY HAD THEIR REWARD "TOY PARTY." THEY WERE SO BUSY AND WELL-BEHAVED!!!  HOPE WE CAN DO THAT AGAIN.
 
THIS WEEK WE WILL HAVE A VERY SPECIAL DAY ON THURSDAY.  STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO WEAR JEANS AND A NS SPIRIT T-SHIRT!  PLUS THEY WILL BE ATTENDING "BRAINSHOWMANIA" IN THE MORNING.  WE ALL LOVE THAT SHOW AND EVERYONE GETS TO PARTICIPATE.

FIRST GRADE NEWS
  
WELCOME BACK AGAIN!!  HOPEFULLY WE WILL GET BACK ON TRACK AND HAVE A FULL WEEK AFTER TODAY.  DUE TO MISSING THE LAST TWO DAYS, STUDENTS WILL HAVE SCHOOL NEXT MONDAY (THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE OFF FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY).
 
AFTER THE TWO HOUR DELAY ON TUESDAY, WE DID COMPLETE THE READING TEST ON "THE BIG CIRCLE" AND SOME STUDENTS DID A RETEST ON THE LONG O SPELLING WORDS.  TOMORROW (WED.) WE WILL START A NEW STORY AND A NEW SPELLING LIST WILL BE SENT HOME (THE TESTS WILL NOT BE UNTIL NEXT WEEK. 
 
THE SECOND MARKING PERIOD IS  COMING TO AN END AND THAT MEANS THE STUDENTS WILL BE GETTING THEIR REPORT CARDS TO BRING HOME.  THEY WERE SCHEDULED TO COME HOME ON FRIDAY, JAN. 23RD.
 
WE WILL BE CONTINUING TO LEARN ABOUT LONG VOWEL SOUNDS, PLANT AND ANIMAL COMMUNITIES, NOUNS, AND SUBTRACTION FACTS TO TWENTY.
 
WE WILL ALSO LEARN ABOUT MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. IN THESE TIMES WHEN THERE IS SO MUCH VIOLENCE AND HATRED IN THE WORLD, IT IS IMPORTANT TO CELEBRATE THOSE LEADERS WHO BELIEVED IN PEACE AND CHANGING THE WORLD THROUGH NONVIOLENT MEANS.

THIS WEEK WE WILL BE READING ABOUT DINOSAURS.  A HERD OF DINOSAURS TO BE EXACT.  THE ESSENTIAL QUESTION IS "HOW DOES LIVING IN A COMMUNITY HELP ANIMALS? 
 
WE WILL BE STUDYING LONG O WORDS IN SPELLING.  IF THE WEATHER COOPERATES, I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE PRACTICE TEST ON THURSDAY AND THE RETEST ON FRIDAY.
 
WE WILL ALSO BE STUDYING CONTRACTIONS THIS WEEK.  WE WILL TRY TO WRITE EITHER SENTENCES OR PARAGRAPHS IN OUR JOURNALS EACH DAY.  WE WILL BE ENTERING A CONTEST FOR "NEWSPAPERS IN EDUCATION WEEK" AND EACH CHILD WILL DRAW A PICTURE AND WRITE A SENTENCE ABOUT WHICH KIND OF BOOKS THEY LIKE TO READ.
 
IN MATH WE WILL BEGIN TOPIC 6 - SUBTRACTION FACTS UP TO 20.
 
THERE ARE ONLY TWO MORE WEEKS IN THE 2ND MARKING PERIOD.  YES, REPORT CARDS WILL COME HOME THE LAST WEEK OF JANUARY!
