WEEK OF DECEMBER 20-23, 2010

HOMEWORK
MONDAY/TUESDAY: 1/2 SHEET OF READING/MATH PRACTICE; STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED ON READING WORD LIST #6 ON TUESDAY AFTERNOON DUE TO POLAR EXPRESS DAY ON MONDAY, 12/20.
KINDERGARTEN NEWS
AS CHRISTMAS DRAWS NEARER WE WILL HAVE LOTS OF DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES. WE WILL CONTINUE STUDYING THE CONSONANT Rr AS IN RABBIT. WE WILL HAVE SHOW 'N TELL ON WEDNESDAY MORNING.
MONDAY IS POLAR EXPRESS DAY. CHILDREN ARE ABLE TO WEAR PAJAMAS TO SCHOOL. THEY SHOULD WEAR SNEAKERS/SHOES TO SCHOOL, BUT CAN BRING SLIPPERS TO WEAR IN SCHOOL. THEY REALLY ENJOYED HEARING THE BOOK ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON. THEY ALSO ENJOYED SEEING THE BELL THEIR TEACHER RECEIVED AND HEARING IT RING.
ON TUESDAY AFTERNOON THE STUDENTS WILL VENTURE OVER TO NSHS ONCE MORE FOR A CONCERT GIVEN BY THE HS BAND. WE WILL GO OVER AT APPROXIMATELY 1:00 P.M.
IN MATH WE WILL BE EXPLORING GEOBOARDS FOR TWO LESSONS THIS WEEK. THEY WILL GET TO MAKE SHAPES ON THEIR GEOBOARDS.
WE WILL READ THE STORY, "WHOSE GARDEN IS IT?" WE WILL ALSO SHARE SOME CHRISTMAS BOOKS AS WELL.
ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON WE WILL HAVE OUR CHRISTMAS PARTY. WE WILL BEGIN AT 1:30 BY MAKING A SNOWMAN PHOTO FRAME. THEN WE WILL HAVE A SNACK AND PLAY GAMES.
ON THURSDAY STUDENTS WILL HAVE AN EARLY DISMISSAL WHICH MEANS THAT WE WILL BE ON A COMPRESSED SCHEDULE AGAIN. WE WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO SPEND TIME WITH OUR FOURTH GRADE READING BUDDIES AGAIN!
HAVE A WONDERFUL SAFE HOLIDAY. OVER THE LONG VACATION TRY TO READ FOR 10-15 MINUTES WITH YOUR CHILD WHENEVER POSSIBLE. PRACTICE THOSE READING SIGHT WORDS. COUNT TO 50 OR EVEN 100. ENJOY YOUR TIME TOGETHER.

WEEK OF DECEMBER 13-17, 2010

KINDERGARTEN NEWS
Monday, December 13th is Day 1, we will have Computers. The Christmas Concert will be held at the NSHS auditorium at 9:30 a.m.. Students may wear holiday attire for the concert.
We will be assessing the students on Reading word list #5 Monday afternoon. Reading word list #6 will come home Monday afternoon in students' take-home folders; assessment will be next Monday, December 20th.
Our next two weeks will be filled with special events and activities. We will, however, try to do some learning as well.
We will study the consonant Rr as in rabbit. We will do the lessons over the 2-week period. Show 'n Tell will be on Wednesday, December 22.
In Reading we will continue with the big book, "A Bed for the Winter." By the end of next week we will begin the final story of Unit 2-titled "Whose Garden Is It?" We will continue with the vowel Ii and high/frequency words-for, he.
In Math we will identify shapes by shape and color, identify a missing piece in a matrix and describe the relative position of objects. Students will copy patterns and identify AB and ABB
patterns; explore a geoboard, make shapes on a geoboard and describe and compare the attributes of geometric shapes. If time and weather allows, we will also place an object on a real graph and pay for objects using pennies.
Upcoming events include:
Wed., Dec. 15th: writing cards for the troops with Sara Lee Company providing cards and snacks for the children
Thurs., Dec. 16th: local mailman visits and picks up "letters to Santa"
Fri., Dec. 17th: Christmas concert with NSE band & chorus at NSHS (for students only)
Mon., Dec. 20th: Polar Express Day (this is a tentative date)
Tues., Dec. 21th: Winter concert with NSHS Band at NSHS
Wed., Dec. 22nd: Christmas classroom parties (1:30 to 3:00)
Thurs., Dec. 23rd: early dismissal for students
HOMEWORK:
MONDAY THRU THURSDAY: EACH NIGHT PRACTICE READING WORD LIST AND COMPLETE 1/2 SHEET OF READING/MATH HOMEWORK SENT HOME IN TAKE-HOME FOLDER ON THE BRING BACK SIDE.

WEEK OF DECEMBER 6-10, 2010

KINDERGARTEN NEWS
In Phonics this week we will study the consonant Ff as in fish. We will have show 'n tell on Friday! Your child has studied the letters: Ll, Oo, Gg, Hh, Tt, Pp, Aa, Nn, Mm, Ii and Ss. S/he should recognize these letters and their sounds (short and long sounds for vowels).
In Reading we will continue with the story, "Bear Snores On." This story includes the letter Cc (when it sounds like a Kk), new high frequency words: we, like, my) and the concepts of reality versus fantasy. By week's end , we will start a new story, "A Bed for Winter."
In Math we will solve a problem by acting it out or drawing a picture. We will practice paying for items up to 10 cents with pennies. We will copy patterns and identify an AB pattern. On our December calendar students are learning to identify the shape-trapezoid!

  • WED., DEC. 8TH IS OUR ALTERNATE DAY FOR SHOPPING AT THE PTO SANTA'S WORKSHOP. YOUR CHILD CAN BRING IN MONEY (IN AN ENVELOPE, PLEASE) TO SHOP.
  • DEC. 8TH IS ALSO THE PTO FUNDRAISER PICK-UP DAY (FROM 3-8 P.M.)
  • MONDAY, DEC. 6TH, YOUR CHILD WILL BE TESTED ON READING WORD LIST #4
  • THE CHRISTMAS CONCERT FOR GRADES K-2 WILL BE ON DECEMBER 13 AT 9:30 A.M. AT NSHS AUDITORIUM.
