THE READING TEST ON "LIFE IN THE FOREST" HAS BEEN DELAYED UNTIL WEDNESDAY, AT LEAST. WE READ THE STORY ALOUD TODAY, BUT, HAD LITTLE TIME TO DO ADDITIONAL WORK. I FELT AN EXTRA DAY WAS NEEDED. WE WILL HAVE THE TEST ON THE CURRENT SPELLING LIST TOMORROW.

WEEK OF DECEMBER 12-16, 2011

FIRST GRADE NEWS



THIS WEEK WE WILL HAVE TWO SPECIAL HOLIDAY CONCERTS. THE FIRST ON MONDAY AT NSHS AUDITORIUM WHERE THE K-2 STUDENTS WILL PERFORM. THE SECOND CONCERT WILL BE FRIDAY MORNING FOR THE STUDENTS AND WILL FEATURE THE ELEMENTARY BAND AND CHORUS AND A SURPRISE OR TWO.


ALSO, THIS WEEK THE CHILDREN WILL BEGIN BEING ASSESSED IN READING BY A NEW TYPE OF TEST CALLED A "FRESH READ." EACH CHILD WILL BE ASKED TO READ A SHORT STORY ALOUD AND ANSWER SEVERAL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE STORY. THEY WILL ANSWER ONE QUESTION BY WRITING A COMPLETE SENTENCE. THIS MAY BE MORE DIFFICULT (AT FIRST); BUT, IT DOES PROVIDE A MORE ACCURATE ASSESSMENT OF THE CHILD'S ABILITY TO READ AND TO COMPREHEND THE STORY. THIS TEST WILL COME HOME IN YOUR CHILD'S FRIDAY FOLDER.

IMPORTANT NEWS!!! ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1ST, OUR CLASS GOES TO SANTA'S SHOP. PLEASE CHECK YOUR CHILD'S FRIDAY FOLDER FOR A SHOPPING LIST (IF YOU DO NOT FIND ONE, I DO HAVE MORE). THIS IS AN OPTIONAL ACTIVITY FOR THE CHILDREN. IF YOU WANT YOUR CHILD TO SHOP, FILL OUT THE SHOPPING LIST PUT IN AN ENVELOPE OR ZIPLOC BAG, AND SEND IT BACK TO SCHOOL BY THURSDAY.


ALSO (AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY, I THINK) WE WILL CONTINUE INTRODUCING THE NEW READING STORIES AND NEW SPELLING LISTS ON TUESDAYS THROUGHOUT THE HOLIDAYS. WITH ALL OF THE EXTRA ACTIVITIES, GIVING THE CHILDREN AN EXTRA DAY TO STUDY, SEEMED A SENSIBLE IDEA.

FIRST GRADE NEWS

THIS WEEK SUMMER ENDS AND FALL BEGINS. WE WILL ALSO HAVE A NORTH SCHUYLKILL PEP RALLY ON FRIDAY, SEPT. 23RD.

WE WILL BEGIN LESSON 3 IN SPELLING. WE WILL FINISH READING THE STORY, "PIG IN A WIG" AND BEGIN THE NEW STORY, "THE BIG BLUE OX." WE HAVE BEEN STUDYING SENTENCES AND WILL NOW BEGIN LEARNING ABOUT THE TWO PARTS OF SENTENCES; BEGINNING WITH THE NAMING PARTS AND, THEN, THE ACTION PART. WE WILL BE PRACTICING THE H/F WORDS: TAKE, AND, UP. WE WILL BE READING THE DECODABLE READER, "FIX IT!"


IN MATH WE WILL BE DOING WORD PROBLEMS AND GOING OVER THE STEPS TO FINDING THE ANSWERS. WE WILL IDENTIFY MORNING, AFTERNOON; FIRST, LAST; BETWEEN, MIDDLE; FIRST, SECOND, THIRD. WE WILL ACT OUT "SOME, SOME MORE AND SOME, SOME WENT AWAY STORIES. WE WILL IDENTIFY TRIANGLES AND, ALSO, HOW MANY SIDES AND ANGLES THEY HAVE. WE WILL SORT SHAPES BY ONE ATTRIBUTE. FINALLY ON FRIDAY, WE WILL WORK WITH GEOBOARDS TO MAKE SHAPES AND IDENTIFY INSIDE AND OUTSIDE. WE WILL ALSO CONTINUE TO PRACTICE WRITING NUMERALS.


WE WILL TAKE TIME TO WRITE IN OUR JOURNALS, AT LEAST TWICE THIS WEEK. WE WILL CONTINUE WITH EXPERIMENTS ON BALANCE AND MOTION(IN SCIENCE). WE WILL BALANCE TRIANGLES AND ARCHES ON CLOTHESPINS AND PREDICT WHICH WILL STAND AND WHICH WILL FALL. WE MAY POSSIBLY DO THE PENCIL TRICK EXPERIMENT THIS WEEK ALSO.


ON FRIDAY WE WILL STUDY THE WEEKLY READER AND STUDENTS WILL GET THEIR FRIDAY FOLDERS. PLEASE TAKE TIME TO LOOK AT ALL PAPERS IN THE FOLDER. MOST CAN STAY AT HOME. THEN SIGN THE WEEKLY EVALUATION FORM AND THE BACK OF THE FRIDAY FOLDER AND RETURN TO SCHOOL ON MONDAY.


OVERALL, I HAVE BEEN VERY PLEASED WITH THE CHILDREN'S BEHAVIOR. THEY ARE TRYING HARD TO FOLLOW CLASS RULES. WE ARE WORKING HARD TO LISTEN CAREFULLY AND FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. FOR SOME THIS IS DIFFICULT; BUT, WE STILL HAVE PLENTY OF TIME LEFT TO WORK ON THESE SKILLS.

FIRST GRADE NEWS/HOMEWORK


SORRY FOR MY ABSENCE ON FRIDAY. I LIVE IN BLOOMSBURG AND ALTHOUGH MY HOME RECEIVED LITTLE DAMAGE; THE ROADS WERE CLOSED AND SEVERAL BRIDGES ALONG MY WORK ROUTE WERE CLOSED. I DO HAVE A BACK-UP ROUTE(ACTUALLY TWO), HOWEVER, BOTH OF THOSE WERE FLOODED AS WELL. ALSO, MY MOTHER'S HOME WAS SEVERELY FLOODED AND WE HAVE BEEN HELPING HER.


I PLAN TO BE IN SCHOOL MONDAY MORNING. WE WILL TRY TO GET RIGHT BACK ON OUR REGULAR SCHEDULE. DEPENDING ON WHAT WAS ACCOMPLISHED ON FRIDAY, 9/9, WE WILL SEND HOME FRIDAY FOLDERS WITH THE SPELLING TESTS AND WEEKLY EVALUATION FORMS EITHER MONDAY OR TUESDAY EVENING.

WEEK OF MAY 23-27, 2011

KINDERGARTEN HOMEWORK

MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY: THERE IS NONE!!!

KINDERGARTEN NEWS

THIS IS A BIG WEEK FOR KINDERGARTEN. OF COURSE, MONDAY NIGHT IS KINDERGARTEN GRADUATION. INFORMATION CAME HOME FRIDAY IN YOUR CHILD'S FOLDER. THE CEREMONY BEGINS AT 6:30; STUDENTS SHOULD REPORT TO THE NSHS GYM FROM 6:00 TO 6:15. THEY WILL THEN BE DRESSED IN CAPS AND GOWNS. ALL CHILDREN ARE TO WEAR WHITE COLLARED SHIRTS. GIRLS SHOULD NOT WEAR ANYTHING IN THEIR HAIR THAT WOULD INTERFERE WITH THE CAP. DOORS WILL NOT OPEN UNTIL 6 P.M. WE WILL PRACTICE OUR SONGS AND PROCESSIONAL DURING THE DAY ON MONDAY.

STUDENTS SHOULD REPORT TO SCHOOL THE REST OF THE WEEK (SORRY, THEY GRADUATE, BUT, MUST STILL ATTEND UNTIL JUNE 2ND). THEY WILL CERTAINLY WANT TO COME TO SCHOOL ON THURSDAY, MAY 26TH, FOR OUR FIELD TRIP TO HERSHEY TO ATTEND THE CIRCUS. THEN, ON FRIDAY THE 27TH, IT IS THE SCHOOL-WIDE CARNIVAL AT NSE. THERE WILL BE ALL SORTS OF ACTIVITIES TO DO (HOPEFULLY, OUTSIDE).

WE WILL TRY TO GET SOME LEARNING DONE NEXT WEEK TOO. WE STILL HAVE A FEW MATH LESSONS TO DO, SOME BOOKS TO READ, AND SOME WRITING/DRAWING FOR OUR "SPECIAL" PROJECT! YES, WE WILL ALSO HAVE A LITTLE TESTING TO DO (ONLY ON MONDAY).

WEEK OF MAY 16-20, 2011

KINDERGARTEN HOMEWORK


MONDAY TO THURSDAY: study reading word list #24(our last one for the year) each night; complete half-sheet of reading/math homework. This is the last week of homework!!!


IMPORTANT: MONDAY NIGHT: FILL OUT THE CAFETERIA REQUEST FORM TO ORDER A LUNCH FOR YOUR CHILD FOR THE DAY OF THE CARNIVAL. SEND IT BACK TO SCHOOL TOMORROW AND REMEMBER TO INCLUDE YOUR CHILD'S STUDENT NUMBER (YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ORDER A LUNCH IF YOU WANT TO PACK A LUNCH FOR YOUR CHILD).



KINDERGARTEN NEWS


This will be our last full week of learning. In Phonics we will study two digraphs, ch and ee. Digraph ch as in cheese and digraph ee as in sheep.


In Reading we will read the book, "This Is The Way We Go to School," a book about children around the world. We will review the letters Yy and Qq. Children will be asked to draw conclusions about stories.


In Math we will be measuring feet, acting out "some, some went away" stories and drawing pictures for "some, some went away" stories. Then we will identify and make symmetrical designs. also, children will be assessed on counting by 5s to 50 and identifying geometric solids (cone, cylinder, cube, pyramid, sphere and rectangular prism). They will also be asked to cover a design using tangrams.


We will continue to write in our journals and, also, on a special project for parents. Children are expected to be able to write in complete sentences now. I am encouraging them to write as much as possible.


Next Thursday, May 19th, students will walk to NSHS to hear the Spring Concert. On Thursday and Friday we will also begin going to the high school auditorium to practice on stage for the kindergarten graduation ceremony. Its important children are present for these practices.


As a reminder, kindergarten graduation will be held Monday, May 23rd, at 6:30 p.m. at the NSHS auditorium. Also, the kindergarten field trip will be on Thursday, May 26th, we will travel to Hershey to see the circus. Then, on Friday, May 27th, it is the NSE school carnival. Sounds like a fun-filled week, doesn't it?


We will have a summer birthday party for all of the children who have birthdays in June, July and August. It is tentatively planned for Wednesday, June 1st. I will send a note closer to that date to all families of summer birthday children.

IN READING OUR NEW STORY IS "ON THE MOVE" ABOUT A FAMILY WHO TRAVELS AROUND THE WORLD. WE WILL REVIEW THE LETTERS Vv AND Zz; LEARN NEW H/F WORDS; WHERE, IS, COME, ME. WE WILL DISCUSS THE "MAIN IDEA" OF THIS BOOK.

IN MATH WE WILL ASSESS THE CHILDREN'S ABILITY TO COUNT BY TEENS TO 100; THEY WILL ALSO COMPARE AND MEASURE LENGTH. WE WILL PRACTICE SOLVING MORE WORD PROBLEMS. THEY WILL ANSWER QUESTIONS ON A CHART AND DETERMINE QUESTIONS FOR A TWO-CHOICE SURVEY. THEY WILL IDENTIFY THE SOLID FIGURE, CONE, AND SORT THREE-DIMENSIONAL OBJECTS.

NEXT WEEK THE READING TEACHERS WILL TEST THE KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN BY HAVING THEM WRITE LISTS OF WORDS. THEY WILL BE TESTED IN THE CAFETERIA ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY. WE HAVE BEEN PRACTICING WRITING OUR WORDS.

PAPERS ON THE KINDERGARTEN FIELD TRIP SHOULD HAVE COME HOME IN YOUR CHILD'S FOLDER. THERE WAS AN INFORMATIONAL SHEET, A PERMISSION FORM, AND A LUNCH ORDER FORM (IF YOU WANT TO ORDER A BROWN-BAG LUNCH FOR YOUR CHILD).

IN MATH WE WILL HAVE A NEW MONTH, A NEW SHAPE FOR THE CALENDAR, A NEW COLOR PATTERN. WE WILL ALSO DEEP COUNTING TO 180 (ONLY 23 DAYS UNTIL SUMMER)! STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT EQUIVALENT SETS AND DOUBLES WHILE USING DOMINOES. THEY WILL ACT OUT "SOME, SOME MORE" STORIES (WORD PROBLEMS). THEY WILL SOLVE A PROBLEM BY GUESSING AND CHECKING (USING LARGE DOT CUBES MAKE OF FOAM). THEY WILL ALSO BE ASSESSED ON THEIR ABILITY TO COUNT TO 100 BY TENS. FINALLY, THEY WILL HAVE TO COMPARE AND CONTRAST STRAWS TO TELL ME WHICH IS SHORTEST AND WHICH IS LONGEST.

IN KID-WRITING WE WILL DEFINITELY BE WORKING ON WRITING LISTS OF WORDS. YOUR CHILD WAS ASKED TO WRITE ALL OF THE WORDS IN OUR ROOM THAT THEY COULD READ. SOME CHILDREN WROTE A LIST OF 78 WORDS. WE WILL KEEP "WRITING THE ROOM." WE WILL ALSO BE WRITING ABOUT SOMETHING THEY WANT TO LEARN TO DO THAT THEY THINK WILL REQUIRE A LOT OF EFFORT. THAT SHOULD BE INTERESTING!

THIS WEEK IN PHONICS WE START A NEW DIGRAPH, TH. WE WILL STUDY BOTH THE VOICED AND UNVOICED SOUND (I ONLY MENTIONED THE VOICED SOUND IN THE NEWSLETTER). THE VOICED SOUND WILL BE FIRST. THE KEYWORD IS FEATHER. ON THURSDAY WE WILL BEGIN THE UNVOICED SOUND AS IN THIMBLE. THIS IS DIFFICULT. PLEASE LOOK OVER YOUR CHILD'S PHONICS WORKSHEET WHEN IT COMES HOME IN THE FOLDER TO REVIEW IT.




IN READING WE WILL READ A REALISTIC FICTION BOOK CALLED "MESSENGER, MESSENGER." WE WILL DISCUSS TRANSPORTATION JOBS. WE WILL REVIEW THE LETTER Uu AND THE STORY ELEMENT OF COMPARE/CONTRAST. WE WILL HAVE SEVERAL NEW H/F WORDS. PLEASE REVIEW THESE WITH YOUR CHILD.


IN MATH WE WILL WORK A LOT WITH COINS (THIS SEEMS TO BE A WEAK AREA FOR MANY OF THE CHILDREN). WE WILL ALSO WORK WITH TANGRAMS. WE WILL WORK WITH RECTANGLES AND JUDGE THE LARGEST VERSUS THE SMALLEST.


ON WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY THE READING TEACHERS WILL TESTING THE KDG. STUDENTS WITH THE DIBELS TESTS. THIS IS THEIR THIRD AND FINAL DIBELS TESTING OF THE YEAR. IT SHOULD SHOW US YOUR CHILD'S PROGRESS SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR. IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS THE READING TEACHERS WILL ALSO TEST YOUR CHILD ON HIS/HER ABILITY TO WRITE A LIST OF WORDS AND TO WRITE A DICTATED SENTENCE. WE WILL PRACTICE THIS IN THE CLASSROOM, BUT, ANY ADDITIONAL PRACTICE AT HOME WOULD HELP.


THIS WEEK THE CHILDREN WILL HAVE A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER ON THURSDAY MORNING AS I GO THE FOUNTAIN SPRINGS CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER TO VISIT WITH THE CHILDREN COMING TO NSE NEXT YEAR. ALL OF THE KDG. TEACHERS TAKE TURNS VISITING.

WE WILL PRACTICE WORD PROBLEMS IN MATH AND WILL DRAW PICTURES TO HELP US SOLVE THOSE PROBLEMS. WE WILL ALSO STUDY SPHERES AND QUARTERS. WE WILL ASSESS STUDENTS TWO MATH SKILLS.


IN KID-WRITING WE WILL CONCENTRATE ON EMERGENCY TRANSPORTATION. DRAWING PICTURES AND WRITING AT LEAST TWO SENTENCES. WE ARE SAVING OUR KID-WRITING TO SHARE WITH FAMILIES AT YEAR'S END.


WE DO HAVE SOME SPECIAL EVENTS NEXT WEEK. CHILDREN WILL HAVE A PROGRAM CALLED "BRAINSHOWMANIA." THIS WILL BE WEDNESDAY MORNING. THEY WILL ALSO HAVE AN EGG HUNT AND EASTER PARTY ON THURSDAY MORNING.

IN MATH WE WILL DO SOME MEASURING AND WE WILL GRAPH A PICTURE ON A PICTOGRAPH. THEN WE WILL WORK WITH NUMBER LINES TO IDENTIFY THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LARGER AND SMALLER NUMBERS. WE WILL WORK WITH TANGRAMS AGAIN TO COVER DESIGNS AND EXPLORE SLIDES, TURNS AND FLIPS. CHILDREN WILL ALSO COUNT FORWARD AND BACKWARD ON A NUMBER LINE AND MATCH NUMBER CARDS TO A SET OF UP TO 20 OBJECTS.


IN KIDWRITING STUDENTS WILL WRITE ABOUT FORMS OF TRANSPORTATION THAT INTEREST THEM. THEY ARE ALSO PRACTICING MAKING LISTS OF WORDS THAT THEY KNOW. THE LISTS KEEP GETTING LONGER AND LONGER!

WE HAVE FINISHED LEARNING ALL OF THE 26 LETTERS (FINALLY!); SO, THIS WEEK WE WILL LEARN ABOUT THE LONG VOWEL RULE. THE LONG VOWEL RULE STATES: A VOWEL NOT FOLLOWED BY A CONSONANT IS LONG; CODE IT WITH A MACRON. PREVIOUSLY, THE CHILDREN HAVE LEARNED TO CODE SHORT VOWELS WITH BREVES9THEY LOOK LIKE SMILES). IT IS A FANTASY STORY ABOUT A GIRL AND HER GRANDMOTHER (ABUELA) AND HOW THEY TAKE A FLYING ADVENTURE AROUND NEW YORK CITY. THIS BOOK INCLUDES MANY SPANISH WORDS; SO, DON'T BE SURPRISED IF YOUR CHILD TRIES SOME OUT ON YOU. WE WILL REVIEW THE VOWEL Ee AND OUR NEW H/F WORDS-HERE, GO, FROM. WE WILL REVISIT THE COMPREHENSION SKILL-SETTING.

THE READING WORD LIST #18 SHOULD HAVE COME HOME IN YOUR CHILD'S FOLDER ON FRIDAY (4-1). SORRY, I FORGOT TO SEND IT HOME (GUESS I WAS SIDETRACKED BY WEDDING PREPARATIONS!). THE CHILDREN WILL NOW BE ASSESSED ON FRIDAY, APRIL 8 AND WE WILL TRY TO STAY ON THIS SCHEDULE.

IN MATH WE WILL BE ASSESSING YOUR CHILD'S ABILITY TO COPY A DESIGN ON A GEOBOARD. EACH MORNING WE WILL WORK WITH A NEW ABC PATTERN ON OUR APRIL CALENDAR AND A NEW SHAPE-THE ELLIPSE! ON WEDNESDAY THE GIRLS WILL GET TO BE QUEENS! THEN, ON FRIDAY, APRIL 1ST, WE WILL HAVE THE WEDDING OF THE Q AND U (A LETTER WILL COME HOME ON TUESDAY TO SHARE DETAILS REGARDING THE WEDDING.

IN READING WE WILL READ A NONFICTION BIG BOOK TITLED "IF YOU COULD GO TO ANTARCTICA." WE WILL DISCUSS ICEBERGS, SEALS, PENGUINS, WHALES AND CONTINENTS. IN THIS INFORMATIONAL TEXT WE WILL STUDY HOW TO CLASSIFY AND CATEGORIZE. WE WILL REVIEW THE VOWEL Ee. THERE WILL BE THREE NEW H/F WORDS: HERE, GO, FROM.

IN MATH WE WILL "SHOP" AGAIN (THIS TIME STUDENTS WILL HAVE 50 CENTS IN NICKELS TO SPEND). WE WILL DIVIDE BY SHARING. WE WILL USE DECKS OF CARDS TO IDENTIFY AND ORDER NUMBERS AND COMPARE SETS OF OBJECTS. THE FOLLOWING DAY WE WILL USE THE DECKS OF CARDS TO COMPARE NUMBERS THROUGH 10. THEN WE WILL SOLVE A PROBLEM BY DRAWING A PICTURE. THE FOLLOWING WEEK CHILDREN WILL BE ASSESSED ON THEIR ABILITY TO NAME THE DAYS OF THE WEEK AND ON THEIR ABILITY TO COPY A DESIGN ON A GEOBOARD.

FYI-OUR FIELD TRIP HAS BEEN PLANNED AND TICKETS HAVE BEEN PURCHASED. WE WILL BE GOING TO THE GIANT CENTER IN HERSHEY TO SEE THE RINGLING BROS.' CIRCUS ON THURSDAY, MAY 26TH.

Kindergarten News

Monday, March 21st, is Day 3 and our special is Music. PSSA tests will still be held in the morning for grades 3-6; we will follow the schedule we used last week. Plus we must remember to be especially quiet in the building.

This week we will be working on the consonant Ww and its sound as in wagon and watermelon. We will have show 'n tell on Friday so look for bags to come home in folders on Monday.

To go along with our letter Ww, we will have two special activities. Wednesday, March 23rd, will be Watery Wednesday! We will be talking about water and completing different experiments involving water throughout the day. It will be WONDERFUL! Friday, March 25th, will be Wacky Hair Day. Start thinking about a wacky hairstyle for the day. Remember-boys and girls with short hair can always wear wigs-they're wacky too!

In Reading we will read the old classic, "Goldilocks and the Three Bears." We will review the letter Gg and discuss the concept of character. We will also continue to study the H/F number words-one, two, three, four, five.

In Math we will identify and work with nickels up to 50 cents. We will practice counting to 50 by 5's. We will put objects in order by height. We will identify a cylinder. We will continue to work with ABC patterns.

We are nearing the end of the third marking period. We will be testing the children again on many of the reading and math skills that have been introduced to see if they have mastered them.

Also-Graduation photos will be taken on the morning of Thursday, April 7th. Children will need to wear a white collared shirt that day. PSP will be taking the photos. More details will follow as the date gets closer.

Kindergarten Homework

Monday to Thursday: each night practice the reading word list # 16. Also have your child do the half-sheet of reading/math practice that s/he brings home in their folder on the "Bring Back" side.


Kindergarten News

Monday, March 14 will be a Day 2 and our class will have Art with Ms. Pasco.

This week we will learn the consonant Xx as in fox and x-ray. there will be NO show 'n tell (thank goodness!). However, the children will go on a treasure hunt around the school to find the spots marked with an X.

In Reading we will read "One Little Mouse" by Dori Chaconas. We will introduce consonant blends and review the comprehension skill, sequence. This is a rhyming book about animals and their adventures.

Speaking of reading, if your child read the newspaper 5x last week, you can send in the "I'm A Reader" contract. Then, at the end of the year, your child receives a certificate and his/her name is in the newspaper (Pottsville Republican). If you misplaced your contract, I have a few here at school, contact me and I will send one home in your child's folder.

In Math we will make an ABC pattern using pattern blocks (we did not do all 5 lessons last week, due to the 2-hour delay on Monday, but we did do math on Friday). We will act out "Some, Some More" and "Some, Some Went Away" stories (we will use pattern blocks and teddy bear counters). We will estimate and measure the capacity of containers using nonstandard units and compare and order containers by capacity; plus, we will write numerals through 20 to label the sets. After that, we will solve a problem by guessing and checking. Children will also be assessed on making and reading a graph (which they will make out of pattern blocks).

Of course it is St. Patrick's Day on Thursday, March 17th. We will celebrate in a small way with some stories, songs and trinkets. Please try to remember to wear green!

Next week, beginning on Tuesday, the older students in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades will be taking their PSSA tests. Please remind your child that it is very important to be quiet in the school on those days. Finally, on Saturday, March 12th, please remember to turn your clocks ahead one hour for daylight savings time. Our class is counting down the days until spring. Now, if only the weather would get more spring-like! Have a good week!

IN READING WE WILL READ ANOTHER ANIMAL FANTASY "MY LUCKY DAY" BY KEIKO KASZA. WE WILL PRACTICE THE COMPREHENSION SKILL-CAUSE AND EFFECT. WE WILL REVIEW THE LETTER Ll AND KEEP PRACTICING THE H/F WORDS - ARE, DO, THAT.

IN MATH WE WILL BE WORKING WITH STRAWS - SORTING THEM BY LENGTH AND PUTTING THEM IN CORRECT ORDER. WE WILL GET OUT OUR GEOBOARDS AGAIN TO LEARN ABOUT LINE SEGMENTS, SHAPES AND DESIGNS. AGAIN, STUDENTS WILL PRACTICE ORDERING OBJECTS BY LENGTH, BUT, THIS TIME THEY WILL WORK WITH PAPER STRIPS. WE WILL PRACTICE MAKING AN ABC PATTERN WITH PATTERN BLOCKS (THE CHILDREN HAVE SEEN AN ABC PATTERN ON THE MARCH CALENDAR). FINALLY, THE STUDENTS WILL LEARN HOW TO ESTIMATE AND MEASURE THE CAPACITY OF CONTAINERS (THEY WILL USE TEDDY BEAR COUNTERS TO DO THIS!).

KEEP PRACTICING THE LETTERS AND THEIR SOUNDS - PARTICULARLY THE SHORT VOWEL SOUNDS -THEY SEEM TO GIVE THE CHILDREN THE MOST DIFFICULTY.

ALSO, PRACTICE READING AND WRITING THE NUMBERS FROM 11 TO 20. MOST CHILDREN CAN SAY ALL THE NUMBERS, BUT, SOME CANNOT READ THE NUMBERS WHEN I POINT TO THEM OR CANNOT WRITE THEM IF I ASK THEM TO DO SO.

IN READING WE WILL BE REVIEWING UNIT 3'S IMPORTANT CONCEPTS AND WORDS. THEN WE WILL TAKE TWO DAYS TO COMPLETE THE UNIT 3 READING TEST. DURING THE WEEK WE WILL CONTINUE TO READ FROM THE JUNIE B. JONES CHAPTER BOOKS AND FROM OTHER STORY BOOKS AS WELL.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 22ND IS DAY 1 AND WE WILL HAVE COMPUTERS. WE WILL ALSO DO THE READING WORD LIST #12 ASSESSMENT ON TUESDAY. WORD LIST #13 WILL COME HOME IN YOUR CHILD'S FOLDER ON TUESDAY NIGHT.

THE CHILDREN REALLY ENJOYED THE "YUMMY YOGURT TASTE TEST" AND THE GRAPHING WE DID SHOULD BE IN YOUR CHILD'S FOLDER. THEY TRIED STRAWBERRY, BLUEBERRY, VANILLA AND PEACH YOGURT. WEEK OF FEBRUARY 14-18, 2011

KINDERGARTEN NEWS

THE LETTER OF THE WEEK IS CONSONANT Yy AS IN YELLOW AND YAK! WE WILL STUDY THE LETTER Yy IN PHONICS AND HANDWRITING ALL WEEK. SHOW 'N TELL WILL BE FRIDAY, AS USUAL. WE WILL HAVE A SPECIAL YOGURT TASTING EITHER WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY OF THIS WEEK (THEN WE WILL GRAPH CHILDREN'S FAVORITE FLAVORS).



MONDAY, FEBRUARY 14TH IS DAY 3 AND WE WOULD NORMALLY HAVE MUSIC; HOWEVER, WE WILL BE HAVING THE VALENTINE'S DAY PARTY INSTEAD. GET READY TO LOOK AT ALL OF YOUR CHILD'S VALENTINES.


IN READING WE WILL READ THE BOOK "HIDE CLYDE" A RHYMING FANTASY BOOK ABOUT A CHAMELEON. WE WILL TALK ABOUT HOW CHAMELEONS CHANGE. STUDENTS WILL ALSO LEARN ABOUT FIGURING OUT THE MAIN IDEA OF A BOOK AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO REVIEW THE VOWEL Oo.


IN MATH WE WILL WORK WITH NUMBER CARDS FROM 1-20; STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO PUT THEM IN CORRECT ORDER. THEY WILL USE OBJECTS TO REPRESENT NUMBERS TO 20. THEY WILL ALSO WEIGH OBJECTS USING A BALANCE. THEY WILL ROLL DICE AND ADD ALL OF THE DOTS TOGETHER TO GET A TOTAL. THEY WILL LEARN TO IDENTIFY CONTAINERS AS FULL, HALF-FULL AND EMPTY. WE WILL CONTINUE TO WORK WITH PENNIES AND DIMES.


SPECIAL REMINDER: THIS WILL BE A FULL WEEK OF SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS. FRIDAY, FEB. 18TH WAS ORIGINALLY AN ACT 80 DAY WITH NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS, BUT NOW, BECAUSE OF SNOW DAYS AND DELAYS, THE SCHOOL BOARD HAS DECIDED TO KEEP THE SCHOOL OPEN THAT DAY. THE SCHOOL WILL STILL BE CLOSED FOR PRESIDENTS' DAY ON MONDAY, FEB. 21ST.


PLEASE REMEMBER TO SEND IN YOUR CHILD'S VALENTINES ON MONDAY, IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY.

MONDAY TO THURSDAY: EACH NIGHT PRACTICE THE READING WORD LIST FOR 5-10 MINUTES; COMPLETE THE HALF-SHEET SENT HOME IN YOUR CHILD'S TAKE-HOME FOLDER TO PRACTICE READING/MATH SKILLS.

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 7 - 11, 2011

KINDERGARTEN NEWS
THIS WEEK IN PHONICS WE WILL FINISH THE CONSONANT Cc ON MONDAY. THEN STARTING TUESDAY WE WILL LEARN ABOUT THE VOWEL Ee (THIS IS OUR LAST VOWEL). WE WILL CONCENTRATE ON THE SHORT SOUND. WE WILL LEARN THE SHORT SOUND AS IN ELEPHANT AND EGG AND THE LONG SOUND AS IN EAGLE AND EQUAL. WE WILL NOT HAVE SHOW 'N TELL ON FRIDAY.
IN READING WE WILL BEGIN A NEW BOOK, "SEEDS" BY KEN ROBBINS. WE WILL LEARN NEW H/F WORDS: THEY, OF, YOU. WE WILL WORK ON THE COMPREHENSION SKILL - DRAWING CONCLUSIONS. WE WILL ALSO REVIEW THE SHORT O SOUND.
IN MATH WE WILL CONTINUE TO WORK ON COUNTING BY 1'S, 5'S AND 10'S AND RECOGNIZING DIMES. WE WILL MATCH NUMBER CARDS TO SETS OF OBJECTS. WE WILL SEPARATE A WHOLE INTO 2 EQUAL PARTS. WE WILL SOLVE PROBLEMS BY GUESSING AND CHECKING. WE WILL COMPARE NUMBERS AND SETS. STUDENTS WILL WEIGH OBJECTS USING NONSTANDARD UNITS THEN PUT OBJECTS IN ORDER BY WEIGHT.
STUDENTS HAD A BLAST ON THE 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL. THEY ENJOYED ALL OF THE EXPERIMENTS WE DID WITH THE NUMBER 100. WE TOOK PHOTOS OF ALL OF OUR "OLD FOLKS" AND OF THE STUDENTS WEARING THEIR "100" EYEGLASSES.
THIS WEEK IS ANTI-BULLYING WEEK. EACH DAY HAS A SPECIAL ACTIVITY CONNECTED TO IT. THERE ARE ALSO TWO SPECIAL PROGRAMS.

  • TUESDAY: CRAZY HATS
  • WEDNESDAY: MISMATCHED CLOTHES OR CRAZY HAIR
  • THURSDAY: WEAR GREEN
  • FRIDAY: WEAR NSE TEAM SHIRT

THERE WILL BE TWO PROGRAMS: TUESDAY: "BE KIND TO ANIMALS" WITH DIANE BUHL OF THE DEPT. OF AGRICULTURE.

THURSDAY: SHERIFF JOE GROODY ON "RAMIFICATIONS OF BULLYING BEHAVIORS

ALSO: ON FRIDAY WE WILL ALL WATCH "THE ANT BULLY"

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 7TH IS DAY 2; OUR SPECIAL IS ART.

NEXT MONDAY, FEB. 14TH WE WILL HAVE OUR VALENTINE'S DAY PARTY IN THE AFTERNOON. VALENTINES CAN BE SENT IN ANYTIME THIS WEEK OR NEXT MONDAY. A LIST OF THE STUDENTS FIRST NAMES WAS SENT HOME ON FRIDAY (2/4) IN STUDENTS' FOLDERS.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS ARE DUE BY THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10TH.
